ΞΆΓάΘ¦ speech sciences graduate wins national award

We want to congratulate recent BMedSci Speech Sciences graduate Laura Payne for her national award from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

Laura received a Giving Voice award, which celebrates outstanding work in raising awareness of the needs of people with communication difficulties.

Laura campaigned for banks and energy companies in the UK to offer their bills and statements in an accessible, simple language format, to enable people with acquired language difficulties after a stroke to be able to read the information.

Such was the impact of Laura's campaign that her local MP Paul Blomfield raised the issue in the House of Commons, and Lloyds Bank now offer a simple language format in line with national Easy Read guidelines. The campaign is ongoing and Laura hopes to persuade more companies to make the necessary changes.
